NIC Permeation Research to be presented at MECC

Wed, 22 October, 2025

Research undertaken by the Non-metallic Innovation Centre (NIC) will be presented at the 19th Middle East Corrosion Conference and Exhibition (MECC).

The research will be presented by Dr Abderrazak Traidia and Dr Amir Shamsa from the paper, ‘Permeation Testing Requirements and Methods for Thermoplastic Pipes.' The paper was co-written by Abderrazak Traidia of the Saudi Aramco Research and Development Center, Anwar Parvez from Saudi Aramco’s Materials Consulting Services Department, and Bernadette Craster, Amir Shamsa and Victoria Lovett from TWI.

The paper reviews recent trends in sour fluid permeation testing of thermoplastic pipes used in oil and gas applications such as thermoplastic liners and reinforced thermoplastic pipe (RTP). There is also an exploration of qualification requirements from a permeation standpoint at material and pipe level, including some recently developed test methods and procedures for sour multiphase fluids including water.

In addition, the research offers a summary of key findings from recent projects on permeation testing of CO2 and H2S through different thermoplastic resins, spanning the commodity, engineering, and high-performance polymer grades as well as multilayer pipe walls at select temperatures and pressures. The work also treated the use of small-scale permeation data to predict performance at pipe level and validation using full-scale tests on pipe sections

About MECC

Taking place at the Dhahran Expo, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from 11-13 November, 2025, MECC is organised by the Materials Engineering Association, AMPP Dhahran Saudi Arabia Chapter and the Bahrain Society of Engineers. Having originally launched in 1979, this biennial event brings together industry professionals for knowledge sharing on corrosion mitigation.
